Saajad Hamid – Management Consultant – Breeding and Growing Entrepreneurs

What are the benefits of entrepreneurship?

It says that somebody who starts a business, based on an idea or ideas, taking risks (many people don't like to take), and hoping to earn a profit. That's the basic idea of who an entrepreneur is.

What are the benefits of starting your own venture?

Well, if you want to change the world, you want to make a lot of money, you want to be remembered, entrepreneurship is the way to do it.

After you make a lot of money would you like to influence the world? I mean think about that, go deep down inside, I mean true, money is important and all that, you want to influence the world, and every time, if you don't believe me, Bill Gates, every time you turn on your PC, there's Bill Gates.

If you want to know the true advantages of being entrepreneurs, drive around to all the rich areas in your country, and all the big houses are owned by people who have their own businesses. So when you are an entrepreneur, you make a lot of money. We know that, that's the obvious thing. But there are other reasons, other than money.People enter into business because they can make a difference in the world. Bill Gates made a difference, if you don't believe me, turn on your laptop and you will see windows show up. If you want to make a contribution to society, some entrepreneurs have used their money to make a difference in this world. Arthur Lock Jack for instance, he donated 20M Dollars (he is a food entrepreneur in Trinidad) to the Institute of Business, which is U.W.I, and they changed the name to the Arthur Lok Jack School of business. I mean I would change my name for 20M also, right? And if you want to make the world a better place, you can also donate your money, the Bhagwansingh family in Trinidad, I know they are not into food, but they donated 5M dollars for diabetics research. If you want to have fun, doing something, start a business in an area that you like, so your work becomes fun, so you don't have to be stressed out. So those are some of the advantages of having your own business.

Title Two

Who is this 'entrepreneur'?

An entrepreneur is basically someone who is a risk taker. What they also do is they go after an opportunity, and they assemble the resources and they take risk, not high risk, they take what we call balanced risk, that's essentially who an entrepreneur is.

What are some qualities of an entrepreneur?

Well, An entrepreneur has several characteristics. One of them is in addition to being a calculated risk taker an entrepreneur is someone who is highly charged and highly motivated, they also are someone who has tenacity, and tenacity means that they will, when they encounter a problem, they are not held back by this problem, they will find a solution to that problem. It's like you are flying a plane and the plane is giving some problems and you come off the plane and you fix the problem while the plane is flying. That's what tenacity is. An entrepreneur is also very resourceful, meaning that they don't have much to start a business and they do a lot of magic with the resources that they have. An entrepreneur is also very creative and also very innovative. Creativity means thinking new things and innovation means doing new things. So those are some of the characteristics of an entrepreneur.
